The Dorm Digest

Between hefty New York price points and the, I’ll say, less than ideal conditions of the dining hall food, on campus, it's tough to find good food at a good price point. So I asked a number of students what their tried and true dorm kitchen meals are. After all, the best food is that which is shared.
Teriyaki Salmon Rice Bowl
“A staple of my Film student diet this past semester. It’s cozy, filling, and very cost effective. Easy, and great for the dorm, everything listed below can be found in one trip to Trader Joes.”

Ingredients
½ cup of Jasmine Rice, washed (“to make microwave-friendly, get the frozen jasmine rice, and sub the half cup for one bag.”)
1 tin of smoked pink salmon (“only used the Trader Joes tinned salmon in the past, think its the best”)
½ Avocado, sliced or diced
2 Tablespoons (“or however much you prefer, really a matter of personal preference whether you want more or less”) Trader Joes Soyaki Sauce
Trader Joes Furikake seasoning, to top
Boil or cook rice, based on your preferred method
Add cooked rice to bowl, as well as tin of salmon. Using at least some of the olive oil from the tin suggested.
Top with avocado, soyaki, and furikake, and enjoy!
Rosemary and Vegetable Couscous
“A common meal in the dorm of an Art History student. Great for if you don’t have much time to cook, or relax, or, like, sleep. Plus, there are veggies, so it has to be healthy!”

Ingredients
½ cup couscous
1 cup chicken stock
¼ cup thawed frozen veggies
1 tbsp butter
A pinch of rosemary
A pinch of salt
1 clove garlic, minced
Add chicken stock to pot on medium heat
Add garlic, rosemary, chopped veggies, bring to boil
Turn off heat once brought to boil, add couscous
Cover pot, and add couscous. Let sit in the pot for 5 minutes, or however long needed to fluff up
Serve (to yourself) and enjoy!
Microwave Mug Cake

Ingredients
1 heaped tbsp of Plain Flour
⅛ tsp Vanilla Extract
⅛ tsp Baking powder
⅛ tsp Baking soda
1 ½ tbsp White Sugar
1 tbsp Cocoa Powder
1 tbsp Vegetable Oil (Any neutral oil)
2 ½ tbsp Milk
Pinch of Salt
“Some” chocolate chips
In mug, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, oil, vanilla, and ½ tsp milk. Mix it with a spoon and it should be really thick. Gradually add the rest of the milk and stop when your batter looks like melted chocolate. Add chocolate chips to the middle and cover it with the batter.
Microwave for 1 min.
Once it’s ready, let it cool for a bit and add any toppings (whipped cream, ice cream, sprinkles) and enjoy while it's still warm!
