Eu me vejo no fim da linha

–

My tongue, like the tangle of wires disrupting the sky of my homeland—

A sky that looks clear from where you stand.

And when my throat rasps out a cacophony of slang devoid of cunning,

I find myself at the end of the line.

The tongue that bears my outward soul gets tangled in the mirror,

And for an instant, I cease to exist in the eyes of either.

And you, who have always seen a clear sky,

Stand paralyzed—

While I try to reach your stars,

Hoping that, perhaps through the tangle of my lines, you might see me.

–

If I scream, maybe you'll understand me

Then, like a stray dog, I start barking

And you see me as a puppy

But if I'm a wolf ready to attack

How could anyone stop me?

When words pass empty through the core

I know that context prevents understanding

So what is the real depth of the friendships I seek?

If I can only show a tenth of my being

A being that feels anger and doesn't know how to express it

That disagrees with your culture and ways but can't speak

And that, amidst frustration, starts screaming

A being that hides behind misunderstanding

And that cries when unseen but insists on hiding

Because being seen as a child prevents it from growing

Direção

A noite me pego pensando

Neste exato momento eu poderia estar longe daqui

–

At night, I find myself wondering

If one day I’ll have children who find my home strange

How I would handle it

When a foreign tongue enters my house

But I don’t have to live in this country

My suffering is voluntary, a choice I’ve made

Right now, I could be far away from here

In a place that would take the effort out of every interaction

Yet it wasn't that place that welcomed me

That gave me the personal words I’d dreamed of making my own

That smiles every morning and praises the very things I always hated about myself

That made me realize that perhaps I deserve to be happy

So my anger is misplaced

Because I just wanted to find a space like that back home

It’s my fault I’ll never be able to be myself here

It’s my fault this conversation will never happen at my dining table

Special Note

I am very hesitant with the idea of having my poems translated into English. I was able to write

them because I had the layer of protection that being in my portuguese gave me. And I’m very

unsatisfied with how they sound in english and the translations make me feel the exact

frustration that I feel in my day to day here as I talk to my best friends at Pratt. There is so much

to my words and context that cannot be captured in this translation, and that might be because

of how much I struggle with my english. I don’t know if that is something that can be added to

the final writing, I am trying really hard this year to express myself more but the idea that I will

never be able to fully make people understand what I feel in this country frustrates me deeply.
