Handala

The handal: a fruit tethered to the land, its solitary vines thriving in the arid desert sand. Handala: a boy who will soon return home, a witness. He is not alone.
You are still thinking. You feel for your limbs. They are not there. What are you feeling? It becomes unknown. What did you used to feel, watching cartoons? You forgot the cartoons. The last image in your mind is the silver handcuffs, hanging heavy from your wrists while in the distance raged the sounds of gunfire and artillery, new to you, but the fear was the same as your parents’ fear.
Parents. Baba. Where is he? You want to see your daddy again. You ask, “Where is baba?” But who are you asking? You’re only what’s left of you, eyes face-down in the dust. You taste blood in your mouth, sharp and metallic, reminding you of when you fell last year. But you weren’t escaping anything. You were playing in the yard. Remember the hospital ride? Where is the doctor? Why isn’t doctor coming? Doctor’s coming. The gift of God is eternal life.
Everything explodes in front of you. But your eyes and ears aren’t there anymore. It’s only a sense that tells you everything around you is gone. So what are you now? You’re buried in the olive grove and the trees, too, have been severed from their body, uprooted and destroyed; that sacred grove, the lineage of your people, standing no more.
The rockets continue. No, it’s the sound of boots. Everything sounds the same. Then, a face in front of you, the face that looked into your father’s eyes, dim with his dying breath. You know this is the same face. Every death is a wrinkle in his scowl; he has looked into many fading eyes.
You feel the presence of the face is gone now. There is no more sound of the boots. When will you grow up? It was always boots, never bombs. In a minute the cartoons will be before you again, the sound of mama pacing the room. You used to dream of being an astronaut.
In your father’s house there are many rooms. The last thing you see – this is a new kind of sight now – is a piece of shrapnel from the bombs, signed with a country’s name. Tanks roll on, crushing the fertile land of your ancestors. You want to grow olive trees again. The olive trees will grow again, their roots resisting the boots. The olive trees will live forever, their sage-green leaves dancing to whispers of deliverance. Handala, the walls have come down but you’ll have new easels to color on. Draw us those trees, Handala; you’re alive and they live on within you. You’re still 10 years old but home is calling, “Come, grow old with me.” Home is a tongue, a language, a poem, a people who cannot be erased.
